A Theoretical Physicst's View of the World

Here's an interesting lecture on physics by Robbert Dijkgraaf. One thing that struck me was that he is truly a theorist because he keeps talking about the "garbage" you get when elementary particles colide. Yep... the world is messy. If you stick with the equations, it is all very simple.

I find it funny when he says "in principle" the world can be explained by one simple equation. That's funny because of the sheer hubris of such a statement. Physicists thought the understood motion when they had Newton's equations, but nobody then, and not today, can explain turbulent flow. Oh sure, they can hand wave and explain that it is "basically" such-and-such, but that "basic" thing they explain is far removed from the actual complexity of real turbulent flow.
