Court Ruling Has People Up in Arms

The recent Supreme Court ruling which makes it legal for corporations to spend unlimited amounts to put forward their "political" point of view since the courts interpret corporations to be "people". Has raised a lot of ire, especially since the same courts agree that real people have only limited rights to donate money to a political campaign but corporations have an unlimited right as "persons" to contribute whatever sum they please.

Here's a video by Larry Lessig on this court decision:

So there's a petition afoot:
We Move to Amend

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend our Constitution to:
  • Firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

  • Guarantee the right to vote and to participate, and to have our votes and participation count.

  • Protect local communities, their economies, and democracies against illegitimate "preemption" actions by global, national, and state governments.
I'm not a lawyer but it sure seems to me that the legal "minds" have worked overtime to come up with a twisted concept of "person" for a corporation. It is absolutely hysterical that the Supreme Court wants to give unlimited ability to buy elections to corporations while limiting the ability of a real person to give more than $5,000 to try to buy an election. Funny!

A lot of people that I respect have signed the petition, e.g.
Howard Zinn
Jim Hightower
Bill Moyer
