What lessons should Americans take away from the 2010 Haiti disaster?
Glenn Reynolds says one of the lessons Americans should take away from the earthquake in Haiti is the imperative of self-reliance: "If you're at the scene of a major disaster, it may be a long time before outside help arrives. But one person is sure to be there: you. And nobody cares more about helping you and your family in time of disaster than, well, you. So it makes sense for you to be prepared to take care of yourself—and look out for your neighbors—for some time afterward."Humans are a social species. We have no fangs or claws. We aren't fast. We aren't strong. We survived because of our social skills. But the idiotic "America strong and free" meme has rotted minds south of the border. Canadians, who have to deal with truly harsh winters know that survival by "depending on the only person that really cares about you, yourself" is nutty. We survive as a group. We are strong as a group.
Think back. When the pioneers were headed across the plains and were under attack, what did the pioneers do? According to the modern day ideologues, they lashed their teams and headed their Conestoga wagons off in all different directions because they know they could only depend on themselves! Wrong! They circled the wagons because they knew there was strength in numbers.
Why had this idiotic idea that "go it alone" and "tough individualism" that the libertarians feed people taken such deep root. It is an idiotic notion. Name me one culture based on liberatianism? Name me one nation? Tell me how do you organize an army around the idea that everybody is his own general and nobody has to carry out any orders? It is idiotic!
Take off the ideological blinders. If you have watched the news, the people who are calmest, safest, and best organized in Haiti are the ones who have gathered together, built instant communities, sing hymns together, and work together to rebuild their lives. The only truly "free & independent" men I see are the looters who grab and run and are constantly threatening each other with knives and guns. Yeah... they're free... free to cut each other's throats.
