I just ran across this documentary on BoingBoing about Derek Paravicini, a musical genius. It is a wonderful story of savant syndrome (think of the movie Rain Man will Dustin Hoffman that was inspired by the savant Kim Peek, or think of Daniel Tammet's book Born on a Blue Day). Savants are typically grossly mentally deficient, but have one area where they far exceed others. Tammet is an example of a savant who is very high functioning and lives a fully independent life, he is an exception among savants.
