Here a nice, short, and easily understood physics lecture to explain the Higgs field and the Higgs boson:
The world has spent $9 billion to find the Higgs boson. What? Yep, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) built by CERN is busy trying to find this predicted particle. So far no luck. But keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully that $9 billion wasn't blown! Hopefully the elusive Higgs boson will be found.
