Steven Weinberg gave a colloquium at CERN in which he reviews the history of quantum field theory, his role in it. He uses the metaphor of the stock market to show how the theory has come in and out of fashion. The following is almost accessible to a general audience with familiary with a modest acquaintance with modern physics. I find that even though I don't fully understand all the concepts, it is fun to hear references to things of which I have a passing acquaintance. It is simply fun to have a sense that a person can get tantalizingly close to understanding what is being said here:
