Daniel Levitin's "The World in Six Songs"
This books was less interesting for me than his earlier book This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession. It has less science. It is more speculative. And I found the categorization of song into six groups not very convincing. Especially when Levitin admits that a song can belong to multiple "categories".
What I did find interesting were the personal stories about Levitin. This was less a scientific book than a confessional and a romp through music history (mostly rock and roll with a bit of other popular musical genres). There was no grandiose review of music through the ages or the various musical genres. I didn't learn much new about music, but I did get a number of insights into Levitin's colourful past and his particular taste in music.
