This is Steven Levitt giving a February 2004 TED talk about crack cocaine and gang life. The big surprise is how low the earnings were for gang members (except the gang leader at the very top)...
The details of this research were developed by Sudhir Venkatesh for his doctoral thesis. He wrote up the experience of making contact and "running with the gang" for a year to gather the details. He wrote this up in his book Gang Leader for a Day. Its a good read. I recommend it.
