The sad fact is that the stimulus that Barack Obama got through the reluctant Congress in 2009 was not big enough. With state governments now downsizing, the economy is stalled and may well go into a double-dip recession. That would be a tragedy. But the Republicans are gleeful. They hope to use the pain and anger to get elected. They are counting on the US voting public to be too stupid to know who (a) created the recession and (b) refused to assist in recovering from the recession. Maybe the electorate really is that stupid. In that case, I guess they deserve the Republicans with all their hypocritical "family values" and political machinations.
And here is what the Republicans in the US Senate refused to deal with. Instead, they voted to close shop and go for a holiday.
There are nearly 7 million people who will soon run out of unemployment benefits. The Republicans take the Marie Antoinette attitude: "Let them eat cake!" This is the party that the electors will choose in November? What kind of society turns its back to those in need? I get a chuckle over how Americans like to self-congratulate themselves on their charity and good deeds, but their political masters march to a different drumbeat.
