Early Global Warming Scare

Here is a bit from a post by Lubos Motl on his The Reference Frame blog. He notes that in September 1969 Daniel Patrick Moynihan sent a memo to President Richard Nixon warning about the imminent peril of "global warming".

Lubos Motl has looked at the accuracy of these predictions:

Predicted increaseActual increaseOverestimate by (in pct)
CO2 conc.81 ppm45 ppm80%
Temperature3.9 °C0.3 °C1200%
Sea level305 cm10 cm2950%

Sadly, I suspect the current dire doomsday predictions of the "global warming" crowd will prove to be no more accurate than Moynihan's. The problem with being a doom-and-gloomster is that there is a psychological component that compells a person to over-indulge in pessimism.
