Try to imagine how this hurricane season would have been understood and remember in say 1960 before there was any satellite recording to capture the movements. It should be pretty obvious that the "historical record" would have missed a fair bit of "the season". Comparing contemporary hurricane seasons to those of the past is a mug's game.
